Changes to double headers for 2022 JDL Championships Season

Background

Basketball SA previously advised that because the 2022 District Basketball Season will run over a shorter period than normal (as we transition to the new structure), a number of double headers will be required to ensure the same number of rounds are played in the 2022 JDL Championships Season.

Based on feedback received after the double headers that were ran to close season 2021, initially different age groups were scheduled to play double headers on different weekends and we avoided scheduling rounds during school holidays where possible. Basketball SA acknowledges that Sunday games have impacts for club trainings, other club functions, families juggling commitments as well as being able to service all games.

A review has been conducted of Sunday double header games played in 2021 and those recently played in 2022. We believe it’s in the best interests of the competition and everyone involved to reduce the number of Sunday games throughout the 2022 Championships Season to only two Sundays. This will enable the full season to be played without impacting start dates for the 2023 pre/grading seasons. The attached document and calendar highlight these changes.

The first double header will be opening rounds 1 and 2, and the second will occur later in the season for rounds 14 and 15:

  • Sunday 3 April 2022, ALL DIVISIONS
  • Sunday 7 August 2022, ALL DIVISIONS

Double header games is an interim approach required for 2022 only. The fixture for 2023 has been mapped out and double headers will not feature at all.

Please note that the double headers for pre and grading seasons will remain in place as originally scheduled.
