South Australian referee James Griguol is set to represent Australia on the international stage at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 in Berlin, Germany.
Griguol was named among FIBA’s elite group of referees considered for the tournament, which brings together the world’s best women’s national teams from 4–13 September.
A long-standing member of South Australia’s officiating community, Griguol is currently a FIBA-licensed referee and has continued to build an impressive career across national and international competitions. Basketball Australia lists Griguol among Australia’s internationally licensed 5-on-5 referees, representing South Australia.
His journey to the World Cup has included a number of major international appointments, including officiating at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico earlier this year. During the tournament, Griguol officiated games featuring nations including the USA, Spain, Italy and New Zealand.
The opportunity is another significant achievement for Griguol and highlights the pathways available for South Australian officials to progress from the local game through to the highest levels of international basketball.
