Basketball South Australia Coaching Courses

We value the role that coaches play in our great game. We offer the following courses to assist with coach development at every level.

Accreditation Levels

Cost: Free

Duration: 3 hours (online)

Minimum Age: None

Eligibility: Beginner coach or anyone wanting to learn more about the basics

Course Objective: To help beginner coaches run a successful practice session focused on skill development and tips for game day coaching

Topics Covered:

  • The Role of a Coach
  • Introducing Basic Skills
  • Introducing Team Concepts
  • Game Day Coaching

Cost: $150

Duration: 3 hours (online), 6 hours in person

Age Minimum: None

Eligibility: Must have completed Community Coach Course or have coached district/association basketball (or equivalent) for 3+ years. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Course Objective: To help coaches understand modern coaching techniques and concepts at a District Club level.

Topics Covered:

  • Body movement fundamentals
  • Basic defensive stance
  • A Range of ball handling skills
  • Basic passing and catching
  • Dribbling technique
  • Shooting technique
  • One handed shot technique
  • Lay-up technique (footwork)
  • 1 on 1 defense (including stance, position and on/off ball movement)
  • Motion principles (Player and Ball Movement)
  • Full court offensive and defensive transition principles
  • 2 on 1 and 3 on 2 principles
  • Self-assess and develop self-awareness

Registration:

  • Click on SA Metro or SA Country to register and complete the online component in etrainu which will take around 3 hours to finish.
  • Click on the “Training Event” section on left hand side to view the calendar in etrainu
  • Navigate to the month of the course you want to attend (dates available in “2023 Coach Course Calendar” below) and click “Club Coach Practical Session”
  • Click “Enrol”, select “CLUB COACH” then press “Enrol”
  • If your club/association/school is paying for your course, you’ll need to arrange a reimbursement from them.

Cost: $250

Duration: 12 hours (in person)

Age Minimum: 18 years old

Eligibility: Must have completed Club Coach Course or have coached metro/district league basketball (or equivalent) for 5+ years. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Course Objective: To help coaches understand modern coaching concepts and techniques at a State and NBL1 level.

Topics Covered:

  • Advanced offensive concepts
  • Defensive schemes and systems
  • Scouting and game planning
  • Strength & conditioning for the basketball athlete
  • Recovery and nutrition for young athletes

Registration:

  • Click on this link to register and select the course you want to attend “Association Coach Course (Date, Month, Year) – 250.00”. Dates are available in the Association Coach Course Calendar below. Please do not close your web browser during the payment process.
  • You will need to attend all 4 sessions in person to be eligible to attain your accreditation
  • If your club/association/school is paying for your course, you’ll need to arrange a reimbursement from them.

Cost: $400

Duration: 17 hours (in person)

Age Minimum: 18 years old

Eligibility: Must have completed Association Coach Course and have coached district/association basketball (or equivalent) for 8+ years or played/coached professionally for 3+ years. Coaches will need to apply via EOI (Expression of Interest) as limited spots will be available. Please note that this course is run every 3 years (last one was held March 2022).

Course Objective: To help coaches understand modern coaching concepts and techniques at a Professional and International level.

  • Talent ID and Evaluation
  • Advanced Scouting & Technology
  • Leadership

The Master Coach accreditation is an Honorary accreditation bestowed by Basketball Australia on Coaches with significant achievements at an international level.
