Becoming a referee is a great opportunity for young players.

Basketball SA offers the Green Shirt Program, an outcome of the Basketball Australia Coloured Shirt Program, aims to promote positive behaviour towards referees, especially beginner referees. If you see referees wearing a green shirt then it’s important for you to know that they are beginners. 

Become a Referee Pathway

Here is how to get involved! 

Register for a Level 0 Referee Course. To find a course, please click here.

By registering for a course, you are also registering an an official with Basketball South Australia. 

Complete the Level 0 Referee Course Exam (must receive 72% or higher, 14 out of 20) 

Submit your exam with Basketball SA via referees@basketballsa.com.au

Create a profile on Refbook. Please make sure you add your correct bank details and emergency contact onto your profile. 

Once you have created a profile you will need to be added into the Basketball SA Organisation, please let us know which email you have used to create your profile. 

Apply for a Working with Children Clearance (WWCC). Any referee aged 14 or older requires a Working with Children Clearance (they cannot referee until clearance have been completed).

If you already have a Working with Children Clearance, please email through to referees@basketballsa.com.au.

Basketball South Australia has a streamlined simple process in regards to getting your stripes and becoming a Level 1C Accredited Referee.
 
How to get your stripes:
  • Attend all 4 Level 1C Module Courses
  • Pass the Rules Exam (provided at the courses)
  • Complete the Level 1C Workbook (provided at the courses)
  • Complete on-court assessments
  • Assessments can be signed off by any Level 1A Referee or Level 1 Referee Coach.

Requirements to attend the Level 1C courses:
  • Minimum age of 12
  • Referee Accreditation Level 0

As soon as a Referee is competent enough to referee a game without the need of shadowing they are considered to be a Level 0 Referee and are eligible to attend the Level 1C Course.

Level 0 referees are eligible to attend the Level 1C course. The course is split up into 4 separate modules which are all required. They do not need to be in chronological order.
For example, you can sit module 1 and 4 in one year and then in the next sit modules 2 and 3.

If you see referees wearing a green shirt then it’s important for you to know that they are beginners.

Please give them a chance to develop their skills without harassment or abuse as they are only just starting their development as an official. Be helpful and if you wish to provide constructive feedback, please do so via the correct channels – e.g. your club or association.

 

Aim of the Green Shirt Program:

  • Make new officials easily identifiable so that they are easy to recognise and support
  • Promote the program to the sports community to raise awareness and increase the recognition and support of new officials
  • Assist in reducing pressure and lessening abuse and conflict directed towards new officials
  • Create a culture of support towards these new officials via the education of players, spectators, coaches and the media about Codes of Conduct, Play By The Rules, Sideline Rage and Sport Rage.

 

Clubs and associations can assist in promoting the program by:

  • Distributing posters, flyers and advertisements in newsletters
  • Letters to participants
  • Establishing Codes of Behaviour and promoting them
  • Having procedures in place to deal with the harassment and abuse of umpires
  • Rewarding spectators, players and coaches who do the right thing
  • Creating a supportive environment for all participants
