STATE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

The State Performance Program is a team-based program, designed to develop State identified athletes for optimal performance (now and in the future) at national level competition, technically, tactically, mentally and athletically as well as enhancing their prospects of future selection in the National Performance Program

The program is overseen by Basketball SA’s State Player and Coach Performance Manager and SA Country’s High-Performance Player and Coach Development Officer. The program is delivered in both Metro and Country areas with some sessions involving both Metro and Country athletes

About State Performance Program (SPP)

The State Performance Program is a team-based program, designed to develop State identified athletes for optimal performance (now and in the future) at national level competition, technically, tactically, mentally and athletically as well as enhancing their prospects of future selection in the National Performance Program.

The program is overseen by Basketball SA’s State Player and Coach Performance Manager and SA Country’s High-Performance Player and Coach Development Officer. The program is delivered in both Metro and Country areas with some sessions involving both Metro and Country athletes.

When delivered by Basketball SA and SA Country High-Performance coaches, the program focusses on South Australia Style of Play with the goal of optimising long-term athlete development.

When delivered by appointed State team coaches, the program focussed on each team’s system of play for optimal performance at Australian Junior Championships. 

The summarised criteria for player selection in the SPP are:

  1. Be fully financial with Basketball SA and/or SA Country Basketball.
  2. Be identified by selectors as having the potential to represent South Australia in the following teams:
    1. Under 16 and 18 Boy’s and Girl’s Teams (Metro and Country);
    2. Under 20 Men’s and Women’s teams (Whole of State).
  3. Recent performance at a consistently high level:
    1. Previous Australian Junior Championships;
    2. EADP Development tournaments (e.g. ECC, SCC or AJCBC);
    3. SA State Junior Championships;
    4. SA Country Junior Championships;
    5. High-level interstate tournaments;
    6. BSA District Competition at Division 1 or 2 level.
  4. Performance at a consistently high level at State Performance Program and Emerging Athlete Development Program:
    1. Camps;
    2. Trials;
    3. Practices;
    4. Practice Games.
  5. Ability to lead, contribute to and not detract (player or their entourages) from the peak performance of the team and other athletes in the team.
  6. Size and athletic ability to compete at a national level, with the ability to defend the athlete’s as well as other positions at a national level.
  7. Willingness to:
    1. Accept and act upon instruction and feedback;
    2. Accept and execute the role defined within the team;
    3. Place State team commitments ahead of lower level commitments (Basketball SA and SA Country will ensure that these demands are reasonable).

Selections may be reviewed at any time.

The requirements for players in the SPP are:

  1. Attend all SPP sessions:
  2. Load management is overseen by Basketball SA’s State Player & Coach Performance Manager, SA Country’s High-Performance Player and Coach Development Officerand appointed team medical staff, in conjunction with the Head of Medical Services. Participants agree to follow directions with regards to commitments to other basketball programs (e.g. association, club, school) and other sports and activities.

On court sessions are led by the BSA and SA Country High-Performance coaches and appointed State team coaches. Athletic Development sessions will be led by staff from University of SA. Appointed team medical staff, in conjunction with the Head of Medical Services, oversee player load and wellbeing via the OwnUrGoal app.
